Ford Focus Shift Solenoids
Fixing this set of common problem is actually pretty easy! This is a common transmission so it is cheap to fix. And can be done by any mechanic.

The Problem
Various calls by the OBD for failed or malfunctioning shift control solenoids
- P0750 SSA
- SSA solenoid circuit failure SSA circuit failed to provide voltage drop across solenoid. Circuit open or shorted or PCM driver failure during on-board diagnostic. No reverse gear (short) or no fourth gear (open). Refer to Pinpoint Test A.
- P0751 SSA
- SSA functional failure Mechanical or hydraulic failure of the shift solenoid. Not all gears present. REFER to Diagnosis By Symptom (307-01 , DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).
- P0753 SSA
- Indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected an electrical abnormality in transmission shift solenoid A. Other associated codes include P0750, P0751, P0752, and P0754 trouble codes.
- P0755 SSB
- SSB solenoid circuit failure SSB circuit fails to provide voltage drop across solenoid. Circuit open or shorted or PCM driver failure during on-board diagnostic. Not all gears present. No converter clutch apply in third and fourth gears. Refer to Pinpoint Test A.
- P0756 SSB
- SSB functional failure Mechanical or hydraulic failure of the shift solenoid. Not all gears present. No converter clutch apply in third and fourth gears. REFER to Diagnosis By Symptom (307-01 , DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).
- P0760 SSC
- SSC solenoid circuit failure SSC circuit fails to provide voltage drop across solenoid. Circuit open or shorted or PCM driver failure during on-board diagnostic. Not all gears present. Refer to Pinpoint Test A.
- P0761 SSC
- SSC functional failure Mechanical or hydraulic failure of the shift solenoid. Not all gears present. Refer to Pinpoint Test A.
- P0765 SSD
- SSD solenoid circuit failure SSD circuit fails to provide voltage drop across solenoid. Circuit open, shorted or PCM driver circuit failure during on-board diagnostics. Not all gears present. Refer to Pinpoint Test A.
- P0766 SSD
- SSD functional failure Mechanical or hydraulic failure of the shift solenoid. Not all gears present. Refer to Pinpoint Test A.
- P0770 SSE
- SSE solenoid circuit failure SSE circuit failed to provide voltage drop across solenoid. Circuit open. Shorted or PCM driver circuit failed during on-board diagnostics. Not all gears present. Refer to Pinpoint Test A.
- P0771 SSE
- SSE functional failure Mechanical or hydraulic failure of the shift solenoid. Not all gears present. Refer to Pinpoint Test A.
- P0773 SSE
- SSE is detected when the gear required by the ECM does not match the actual gear when vehicle is driven.
The Fix
The 09 Focus uses the Ford 4F27E transmission. One of the common issues is the failure of shift solenoid A and/or B. These are the two most used units. But any of the solenoids are fair game to fail. The good part is that they are all easily accessible and if you do one it makes sense to do any other units that may be a problem. They are identical. And you can do a filter change all at the same time!
Dropping the pan is straight forward. Just a bunch of 10MM bolts And that exposes the trans innards. The neat thing is that all 6 solenoids are mounted as a pack to the control module. It is a simple task to unclip the electrical connection and a single 8MM bolt and you can R&R any of the solenoids. VIDEO
I found the Ford docs that show the location of the solenoids on the valve body. This along with the colored control wire makes the ID a snap.
They are such a common issue that there are kits that include the filter, gasket and both A and B solenoids. Others have the whole set of solenoids (6) included! The complete control unit with all six solenoids installed is also available. Saves a bit of work.

On the Mazda FN4A-EL version all the shift solenoids are located in the same positions but the solinoid designations are a bit different. I am not surewhy but they are.
