Hooking a Holley carburetor (or any other carb for that matter) to a Ford AOD transmission is simple but the TV cable adjustment is extemely important!
The Ford AOD uses a throttle valve (TV) cable instead of a vacuum diaphragm to tell the transmission how much throttle you're giving the motor, so it can time the shifts. Adjustment of the TV cable is critical. A mis-adjusted cable can cause you to fry your transmission in only a few miles.
The common mistake with AOD conversions is getting the ratio between the throttle and the TV cable wrong. Most incorrect installs just find a pre-drilled hole in the throttle bracket, but the geometry is wrong. To get it right you may have to fabricate an adapter plate for the throttle bracket. The cable needs to move exactly as much as the throttle. Not just kinda close.
The TV cable can be sourced from a variety of sources including Windsor-Fox, Total Performance and Lokar. The carb plate with the Morse cable bracket is usually included and the TV cable bracket can be hand fabricated from steel stock. To set it up, simply follow the instructions from your shop manual to correctly adjust the line pressure.
I found out that a company named Sonnex makes this bracket. Their part # is TV Cable Corrector AS2-02K. The TV cable corrector AS2-02K kit adjusts the geometry of the TV linkage to prevent the TV cable from being pulled out of adjustment at full throttle. A quick and inexpensive fix for any transmission with a TV cable. This bracke may not fit some early models of Holley's and some versions of the Holley Dominator.
There is an additional Sonnex kit AS1-01K This TV Cable kit prevents the TV cable from being pulled out of adjustment at full throttle by allowing the spring to compress and absorb any excessive cable pull.
Monster Transmission and Performance offers a cool AOD add on bracket if you can't fab one - Ford AOD Stainless Steel Throttle Cable Bracket [Part# AODTVBRKT]
If at any time you notice a wierd shift from 1-2 or 2-3, stop and check and/or adjust the cable because the life of your trans is in the balance!
