Before we get started this was not an issue of a bad rearend. It was a case of "I wanna upgrade." This one is not really anything earthshaking. Pretty much a straight forward R & R of the rearend unit. Out with a 3.00 and in with a 3.55.
It was a case of "I wanna upgrade." That simple. Actually the 3.00 gears served me well over the miles and it was a simple enough upgrade. We rummaged around for a good 8 inch open center section and had a swap meet OEM Ford 3.55 gear set installed by Ring and Pinion Shop in Clinton Township, MI.
The same time that we swapped out the center sections we also did some general housekeeping on the rear end unit. The axle bearings and seals were replaced while they were out. Another sidebar project was a cleanup and U-joint replacement on the driveshaft since it was out and loose. All the stuff was done while we had it apart for service.
